Red Stone

When an asteroid that NASA was tracking finally crash landed on the moon, they knew this was their chance to inspect an item that had traveled an extremely long distance through space. They sent a two man team to the moon comprised of astronauts David Chadwick and Alex Rios. Rios, the senior of the two was named mission leader, and took the lead. Upon landing on the moon, the asteroid was found resting in a crater. Rios and Chadwick moved closer to the asteroid while it started to glow red. The red light got brighter and brighter until the asteroid shook itself apart, and all that was left was a beautiful glowing red gemstone hovering above the remnants of the asteroid. Chadwick, against Rios' orders, moved closer to the stone in an attempt to collect it. The gemstone started to violently shake, and sped toward Chadwick, ripping through his chest and killing him instantly. The gemstone then struck the astronaut's shuttle, destroying it in an instant. Alone and scared, Rios attempted to radio back to NASA without success. The stone hovered closely to Rios' face and seemed to falter for a moment. Rios closed his eyes, and said a short prayer as he thought the stone would surely kill him as well. The stone moved closer and closed to Rios until he could feel the warmth of the stone through his space suit. Rios, unknowingly, reached for the stone with both hands, and the light grew brighter. Without warning, the stone thrust itself towards Rios' chest and merged inside the space suit. Rios looked down at his chest to see the stone was gone, and the space suit beginning to glow bright red. The space suit then burst open, and Rios held his breath out of reflex. When he opened his eyes he saw that he was surrounded in the light of the red stone and he was able to breathe in space! Out of sheer joy Rios jumped for joy and suddenly found himself flying through space at a high rate of speed. It took a few more days, but Rios was able to discover that the stone had merged with him and given him amazing powers. Rios, taking the name Red Stone, found that he could generate a force field and shoot bolts of red energy from the power of the stone. Rios knew that no one on Earth would believe his amazing story, and also realized that the US government, and NASA would want the stone for themselves.
Red Stone now explores the deepest reaches of space in an attempt to find a reason for the stone's power and to fulfill every astronaut's dream of seeing what's really out there!

I've been wanting to do a space themed character for a while now, and really like how this guy came out. Maybe more space adventures down the road...
